December 2024 Newsletter
Presidents Report

2024 has been a busy year for our polocrosse community. We had early participation and success from QLD players at Berragoon and the Swan cup. Which was a warm up for the success we had at the Barastoc interstate challenge at Warwick. In a true interstate clash against NSW, Qld came out on top 6 wins to 5. Can I congratulate Warwick as host and the players coaches and managers for a memorable event.
The much anticipated highlight of the year was the Nationals held at Chinchilla. A mammoth effort by the Chinchilla club led by Murray Sturgess and the Nationals committee with John Mullins as chair delivered a very polished event. When things happen it was all smooth on top with a flurry of action behind the seen to fix the problem with minimal fuss.
To those who made this week happen and you are too numerous to mention individually, QLD polocrosse thanks you for the show you put on.
Players coaches managers and supports we recognize the commitment to polocrosse you show to represent your State and we thank you.
A special mention to the Masters women who won for the first time.
So quickly the Darwin nationals at Freds Pass will come round and we will be trekking to the Territory. Preparations are beginning to ensure QLD teams are supported as best we can.
I note that we have confirmation that the 2028 Nationals will be hosted by NSW.
Qld supporters who did not make the pilgrimage to South Africa in July to support our World Cup team were glued to their TV screens watching every minute of every game of a fascinating and exciting event. Congratulations to Matt Davison, Tom Oneill , Sam Oniell, Lindsay Doolin ,Beth Haffey and Kent wells as coach for carrying the flag for QLD. No matter the result which could have so easily resulted in being world champions again, we are all proud of the performance you gave and commitment to our sport to represent at the pinnacle of our game.
Expressions of interest have been called for the next world cup, most likely in 2029 and I note Warwick have again put their name forward.
In August we hosted a USA youth team at Eidsvold and Cunningham carnivals and although the score was a little lopsided it was a great success for our sport. The USA team were thrilled that Beth Haffey made it to Eidsvlod after just retuning from South Africa. To see a World Cup player in action days after the event was special. A big thank you to Bill Taylor who coached the QLD team and to Kelly Sturgess who performed a mammoth job as manager, coordinator and Jamie Bredhauer who was our tour liaison member.
The finale for the year was held at Tansey on the newly turfed fields. A strong competition across the grades however no doubt congratulations must go to the Tansey club for their super strong showing taking out most of the silverware.
In 2025 we will again hold Barastoc at Warwick with teams already announced. In July we will have Zone titles at Tara and can I encourage all players to nominate as the more teams the better the competition. Multiple grades will be held to ensure an even competition and it is a lot of fun to pull on a different shirt and play with new people.
An enquiry has been received from the UK to bring a junior side to play in July. It is hoped that they can play at Tara and Narrabri as those dates suit their ability to travel. This is subject to confirmation.
Chinchilla club has nominated to host our end of year party for 2025. Thank you Chinchilla , a State Championships will be a breeze after the Nationals.
On the management side Trish Shepherd and I have just been to an All States meeting in Melbourne
Where discussion was held on many issues and I will ask Cat Nicholas to expand on some of the discussion latter.
Of key issues affecting Qld polocrosse, there is a requirement from the Australian sports commission that gender equity on boards is not just aspirational but written into the constitution.
A second requirement will be that boards comprise a blend of elected and appointed members.
The chairperson will be required to be elected from within the members of the Board.
A failure to comply will result in a reduction of funding from the government.
In 2024 we faced a declining number playing our sport. It may be cost or it may be age or a multitude of reasons.
For the future of polocrosse our most important discussion this next year is around player retention and recruitment. We must ensure that polocrosse is fun at all levels no matter your aspirations.
The management committee will support PA in making Participation a key objective in 2025 to grow our sport.
The Toowoomba, Cunningham and Stanley Rivers Clubs have made a submission to QPA to have a low goal competition at their carnivals. Capped 12 point teams with players pooled if needed to create a safe competition with no player over 2 points. A trial for this competition has been approved for 2025 by PA and will be made available to all clubs if they choose.
An alternate competition for those C grade and below players who are the backbone of our sport may be to introduce capped club competitions where all the teams for example play at a maximum of 25 points to ensure an even competitive competition.
NSW have asked that a low cost non competitive option at carnivals instead of blue bandage which may provide a starting point for players to test our sport.
After a little disjointed season in 2024 we aim to make 2025 the year of the club teams. Challenging for those great historic perpetual trophies that clubs own. Lets be proud to pull on the club shirt and support our teams.
I challenge clubs to be innovative about how you will make your carnival special.
Can I take a moment to congratulate Paul McGrath on being appointed National chief umpire. Qld has lobbied for a single point of truth in the NUC for some years and I am pleased that PA has responded with his appointment. Still on the umpire front the instate exchange program has been reinstated with Qld to provide a senior umpire to another state for a carnival next year.
On the administration side can I thank Debra Austin for her work during the year , especially in the lead up to the Nationals and stepping back in for the AGM. I would also like to thank Donna Gurney for her contribution to the role during the year.
The QPA have appointed a new administrator , Adam Paroz who will start work on Monday to learn the ropes. Adam comes from a sport administration background, most recently with Cricket QLD.
Adam brings a variety of skills to the table and will learn about our sport along the way.
I would like to thank the management committee for their hard work during the year making polocrosse happen. Our sport does not just run itself . It is countless hours by volunteers at all levels of our sport.
Trish Shepherd is a diamond for polocrosse not only as State Treasurer and my conscience , but also for the Southeast zone.
Kent and Russel have been our selection chairs as well as other roles and perhaps we have been to hard on them as they are both stepping down this year. Well done gentleman for your contribution.
Jamie has been our go to make things happen with the USA tour, horse welfare on the app as well as traveling just about everywhere.
Michelle Sleeth is also stepping down this year after working diligently on women’s polocrosse and risk. Michelle has negotiated for Duncan Sturrock to work his magic on a risk management strategy for Qld polocrosse. I am sad to see Michelle leave as we need members on the management committee to give a voice to the small clubs and lower grade players.
Charlie Lund is quickly finding confidence in his position with junior development, running a school at Roma and more planned for next year. Thank you Charlie for stepping up to run the draw at the State championships.
Matt Gleeson is perhaps the busiest man in Polocrosse during the season as state chief umpire and a member of the management committee. Our thanks to Matt for his time.
Magic Stone. What an asset to QLD polocrosse and its members. Thank you to those who paved the way in establishing the QLD cattle business. In the treasurers report you will see how valuable this property has become to our financial sustainability. More importantly we must recognize Darryl Oleary and his committee for the enormous contribution they make in running it day to day. A motion latter in the meeting will address this issue.
Last year we recognized that we were not extracting the most value from having delegates in the room at this meeting. This year we have added discussion points and time for issues to be debated at the end of the meeting . Please use this time to guide the future of QLD polocrosse in a constructive manner.
Thank you again to the polocrosse community for taking the time to attend this meeting and contributing to the management of our sport.
I wish everyone a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
Mike Williams
QPA President
QPA Welcomes new State Executive Officer

This month, QPA is delighted to welcome Adam Paroz as the new SEO for the Association. Adam brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from his time at Queensland Cricket.
We would also like to express our gratitude to our outgoing SEO, Deb Austin, for her dedication and contributions to the role. While Deb transitions from this position, we are confident she will remain actively involved in the sport, continuing to contribute to the success of polocrosse in Queensland in other ways.
Below is an introduction from Adam—please don’t hesitate to reach out and introduce yourselves!
Hi everyone,
I am thrilled to step into this role and to have the opportunity to work alongside such a talented and passionate group of volunteers. Your dedication to the sport is inspiring, and I am eager to collaborate with you to drive growth and sustainability for polocrosse in Queensland. A big thank you to Deb who has passed on all of the resources, without which this job would not be possible.
A Little About Me
I’m a proud Toowoomba local, having attended Concordia for primary school and St Joseph’s College at the top of the range for high school. I’m also a husband and father to two wonderful (and mostly well behaved) boys. My academic journey includes a Bachelor of Business with majors in Sports Management and a Master of Business Administration from Griffith University. I have an unhealthy love for Formula 1 and Ferrari, so if there are any other Tifosi out their that would like to chat F1, it’s the easiest conversation starter for me. Over the past decade, I’ve gained extensive leadership and management experience, including five years with Queensland Cricket, where I’ve worked across various roles. While polocrosse is new to me, I’m excited by the opportunity to learn, innovate, and contribute to a sport that offers a blank canvas for success.
A Vision for Success and Sustainability
For me, success and sustainability in sport are built on five key pillars. These will guide my focus, and I look forward to working closely with each of you to explore new and innovative ways to grow polocrosse, improve performance, and ensure the long-term viability of our association.
- Participation Growth
- Expanding the sport's reach by engaging juniors and equipping them with the skills and knowledge to stay involved.
- Collaborating with schools and the Australian Sports Commission to increase exposure to polocrosse and attract the next generation of players and leaders.
- Investing in the development of coaches, umpires, and players from grassroots to high-performance levels.
- Ensuring programs and training resources foster skill development, performance, and a deeper interest in the sport.
- Creating an engaging and appealing format for players, volunteers, and spectators.
- Strategically promoting the sport to target audiences, driving new interest, and making polocrosse carnivals unmissable events.
- Enhancing strategic planning, governance, and reporting methods, including financial, impact, and ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) reporting.
- Exploring financial opportunities through grants, partnerships, and potentially a dedicated foundation for specific projects.
- Strengthening relationships with local, state, and federal governments to support the association's goals.
- Collaborating with state governments and national bodies to ensure facilities meet the needs of players, coaches, umpires, and spectators.
- Maintaining and upgrading grounds to ensure they are suitable for play and enjoyable for all participants.
Moving Forward Together
I am eager to bring my experience and passion to this role, but I know that real success will come through teamwork and collaboration. I welcome your ideas, insights, and feedback as we build a stronger, more sustainable future for polocrosse in Queensland. Together, we can make this sport thrive.
I will be working between QPA and Queensland Cricket in the short term, but will be in the office in Russell Street every Monday and Thursday from 8.30am till 2.30pm, with the rest of my hours working hybridly from home or the QC office at Concordia. However if you want to attend the office any other day or time and need access, I am only ever a phone call away, and am more than happy to meet you there.
Thank you for your commitment and enthusiasm. I can’t wait to get started with all of you.

Stanley Rivers
Stanley Rivers Club had a good 2024 season, attending 12 carnivals. With a few players out due to illness and injury, we were mostly travelling with only one team and sometimes less. We spent most of the year winning or losing games in the finals by one goal, so had some enjoyable polocrosse, and stayed true to form losing by one goal to Warwick 3, in the C Grade Final at the State Championships. It was a great game, live streamed on the main field, and played in great spirit.
The highlight of the year for the club was our annual carnival. Thirty-one teams descended on Kilcoy from Southern Queensland and New South Wales We were thrilled to be invited to host the Australian team as a warmup for the World Cup.
Invitational teams from Tara, Warwick and Gold Coast played in a mixed competition with the Australian team. The Australian team was not eligible for the Champagne Cup A Grade trophy which was won by Warwick in a thrilling final by one goal.
Other teams attending came from as far away as Wandoan and Chinchilla in the west and Guyra and Inverell in New South Wales. With the mixed and the A Grade teams on the main field for the entire weekend, spectators were treated to some of the best polocrosse anyone could wish to watch.
Kilcoy was blessed with almost perfect weather for the weekend with a lot of people who had not been to the area before commenting on how lovely the area is. Because of the lead up rains and the extensive preparation, the fields played beautifully all weekend impressing both the regular players and the Australian team.
We have had a very wet end to the year and, while we all like the rain, it will hopefully not give us another year interrupted by washed out carnivals.

We wish everyone a relaxing holiday season and can’t wait to see you back on the field in the new year. Thank you again for your ongoing support!
Pyramid Polocrosse Club Report 2024
What a year, where do we start for the green & yellow club in the North.
Let’s rewind the year…Thistlehill Forest ridden by Skylah taking out the sub junior ASHS high point award. This was closely followed by Dallas Cook being selected to play in New Zealand in the U/16 Junior touring squad.
Then there was rain, rain and more rain. So an idea was hatched to run our first practice day camping up at Tepon, riding under the undercover arena. We all enjoyed drying out.
The playing season kicked off for some with a month on the road starting at Emerald carnival, then Roma before the Barastoc’s where our juniors Dallas, Hannah & Katie got their first taste playing for Qld Junior Boys/Girls team. The girls took out the series against NSW (which wouldn’t be the last time). Katie has also been chosen in the Girls Barastoc team 2025.
Then there was the anxious drive home to FNQ waiting for the Qld Nationals team to be dropped. Dallas & Hannah Cook, Katie Landrigan & Skylah Tieppo all were selected. What a relief. All the miles chasing white lines to the selection carnivals had paid off. The Chinchilla Nationals would have to be the biggest highlight and accolade for our club in history. 4 of our juniors being selected to play for Qld was no easy task. They worked extremely hard and earnt their spot in the team and even better when the older girls were in the winning Junior Girls Team!! Go Qld! A special mention goes to Katie Landrigan who was later selected in the 2024 Australian Junior Girls Squad.
Then there was rain, rain and more rain. We relocated our first carnival to the Townsville Polocrosse Grounds to ensure we still had game time.
Courtney Landrigan got the call up and was selected in the Junior Development Team against USA. Wow that looked like a fun weekend making friendship and connecting with like minded people across the globe.
Of recent, Dallas & Hannah Cook have been selected in the Qld Upper Hunter Mixed Intermediate Show Team. Looks like 2025 is shaping up to be another big year on the road.
At most carnivals we continued to heavily represent the green and yellow in high numbers and we’re not shy of winning individual awards. Suzy & Mark’s tack room must be busting at seams with all the prizes won from the Claxton & Doran girls. We have welcomed new members Carlie & Jamie Tydings from Kingaroy and seen players return.
Almost at the finishing post we had a very successful Bunnings Sausage Sizzle with more dates in the calendar to come. Talking of fundraisers, what about the Christmas Mega Raffle! With the major prize being a Service Fee by Tallerack Hangman kindly donated by Koolachu Australian Stock Horses. A massive shout out to Ashlee Milton who solely put together this Christmas Mega Raffle.
We finished the year by attending the QPA AGM and cocktail party. It was great to connect with other clubs and board members to share experiences and we congratulate everyone elected on the board.
All in all it’s been a great year and we look forward to seeing where Pyramid’s adventures takes us next year.

Warwick

Congratulations to all club members on a big year of Polocrosse culminating at the Qld State Titles at Tansey. Special mention to both Warwick & Tansey for a great finale to the season with the open final entertaining till the end.
15 Club members have been selected to represent Qld at the 2025 Barastoc Interstate Series 2/3/4th May at Warwick – always a competitive state event.Ben C.and “Marko” are having a stellar start to polocrosse- selected to represent Qld. at the Muswellbrook Show 2025. We have two club members awarded Junior Sports Stars of the month – Annabel G. and Ben C.. In November, the Club celebrated 2024 with an outing to the Harness Racing Special Event held in Warwick – approx.. 60 members attended a great (very hot) afternoon with Santa gracing his attendance in between trots. He brought gifts all young and some old !!
The next weekend saw a working bee at Morgan Park – restoration/maintenance work on the playing fields(see photos) – 35 club members took part in kikuyu re-turfing selected areas of the fields- then a rotary hoe used followed by irrigation pipes laid. Thank goodness after the first water – the recent storms have taken over from the irrigation - a relief from costs and hands on work requirements. To supply a great playing surface, on going maintenance is a must for the best surface for our horses.
Congratulations to club members with respect to QPA State Meeting – thanks to Kent W for his service on retirement from state executive. – Deanne McL for inclusion in 2025 state executive. Cameron S. –State Selector and Katie O. State Junior Selector. Matt G. re-elected as State Director of Umpiring. The newly appointed National Director of Umpiring is club member Paul McG. The Annual State Awards Evening was supported by 15 club members with Ella M. picking up the Champion U/21 Womens Player Award and Craig C. awarded Champion Masters Mens Player
Eidsvold Club
2024 was a wonderful year for Eidsvold. We hosted the Junior Development Invitational Competition between USA and QLD at our carnival in August. This was a major draw card for us and we loved seeing members of both teams develop over the weekend. The friendships made will provide opportunities for a lifetime. We congratulate the QPA and American Polocrosse Association on this initiative and look forward to future initiatives like this that bring opportunities for smaller host clubs.
2024 was one of our largest carnivals, with a total of 30 teams, including 2 full teams of subbies/minis who played some great feature games over the weekend. The future of our sport is bright if we can continue to provide good horses, support and pathways for our younger generation to get into, and continue, in our sport.
We look forward to hosting our carnival on the first weekend of August in 2025 and welcoming friends from far and wide.

Merry Christmas
QPA would like to thank all the players, officials and volunteers for their contributions to the 2024 season. We wish you all a Happy and Safe Christmas, and look forward to welcoming you back for season 2025.
